a. We believe in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as verbally inspired in all parts and therefore wholly inerrant as originally given by God. [Psalm 19:7-11; Psalm 119:89; Matthew 5:18; 2 Peter 1:16-21]
b. The Bible is, therefore, the supreme and final authority in faith and practice. [Luke 16:29-31; John 5:46-47; 2 Timothy 3:16-17]
2. God
a. We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe in this doctrine of the Trinity. [Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 3:16-17; Matthew 28:19; John 16:7-15; 2 Corinthians 13:13]
b. God is a spirit, unchangeable, all-powerful, all-knowing, omnipresent, holy, just and merciful. [John 4:24; Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8; Jeremiah 32:17; Psalm 139:1-13; Isaiah 6:3; Deuteronomy 32:4; Lamentations 3:22-23]
3. God the Father
a. We believe that God is the Heavenly Father of all who have by faith received Jesus as personal Savior. [Matthew 6:9; John 1:12; 20:17; Galatians 4:6]
b. We believe that God the Father has the relationship of Father to the Lord Jesus Christ as well. [John 17:1; Colossians 1:2, 3]
4. Jesus Christ
a. We believe in the absolute deity of the Son of God; that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was born of the virgin Mary, and is perfect God and perfect Man. [Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18-25; 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 4:15; 7:26]
b. We believe in the bodily resurrection of Christ, His bodily ascension into heaven, and His presence at the right hand of God the Father as our High Priest and Advocate. [Mark 16:19; Acts 1:3; 1 Corinthians 15:1-28; Hebrews 7:25]
c. We believe in the personal, bodily return of our Lord Jesus Christ. [Acts 1:11; 1Thessalonians 4:13-18]
5. The Holy Spirit
a. We believe the Holy Spirit is a divine Person who convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. [John 16:8-11]
b. We believe that He was active in creation and that He is active in redemption as He regenerates men. [Genesis 1:2; Job 33:4; John 3:5-8]
c. We believe that He indwells, gifts, baptizes, seals, anoints, empowers, guides, teaches, and fills the Christian. [John 14:26; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:14-16, 26-27; 1 Corinthians 12:1-4,12-13; 2 Corinthians 1:21-22; Ephesians 1:13-14; 4:30; 5:18; 1 John 2:20, 27]
6. Creation
a. We believe that in six days the Triune God created the heaven and the earth, including all forms of life, by direct act, and not by any process of evolution. [Genesis 1:1-2:3; Job 33:4; John 1:1-3]
b. We believe that man was created in the image of God, but by willful transgression became sinful and justly under the condemnation and wrath of God. [Genesis 1:27; Romans 3:23; 5:12; Ephesians 2:3; Hebrews 9:27]
7. Satan
a. We believe that Satan is literal and personal, and that he was the agent of the fall of man. [Genesis 3:1-15; Job 1:6-12; Luke 4:1-12]
b. We believe that he is the” father of lies” and the “god of this world,” but that he, along with his host of demons, will be judged and eternally punished in the lake of fire. [John 8:44; John 16:11; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Revelation 20:7-10].
c. We believe that the Christian’s responsibility is neither to rebuke Satan nor to run from him, but to “resist him, steadfast in the faith.” [James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:9]
8. Man and Salvation
a. We believe that all human beings are born sinners and therefore are alienated from God and totally depraved, utterly unable by their own efforts to remedy their lost condition. They need salvation, but they are unable to save themselves. [Isaiah 64:6-7; Romans 5:12; 8:7-8; Ephesians 2:1-3, 8-9]
b. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ lived a sinless life and died for our sins as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice. [Isaiah 53:4-6; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24]
c. We believe that Jesus’ sinless life and substitutionary death fully satisfied the justice of God for the sin of man, and that all who believe in Jesus are justified on the ground of His shed blood. [Acts 13:39; Romans 3:24; 5:9; 1 Peter 1:18-19; 1 John 1:7]
d. We believe that the salvation of every believer is secure for all eternity, but that every believer should also “make his calling and election sure” by honest examination and striving to live a holy life. [John 10:28-29; Hebrews 12:14; 1 Peter 1:15-16; 2 Peter 1:9-10]
9. The Church
a. The body of Christ
1) We believe that the church was established by Jesus Christ and that it was purchased with the blood of Christ and founded upon Him, Who alone is its head. [Matthew 16: 16, 18; Acts 20:28; Ephesians 1:22, 23; Colossians 1:18]
2) We believe that the church was constituted and empowered on the day of Pentecost by the coming of the Holy Spirit, and that it is a spiritual organism made up of all who in this New Testament dispensation have been born-again by the Spirit of God. [Acts 1:4-8; 2:1-47*; 20:28; 1 Corinthians 12:13, 27-28; Ephesians 3:21; Colossians 1:24]
b. The Local Church
1) We believe that the local church is a body of born-again and baptized (by immersion) believers, united in organization for teaching, worship, fellowship, observing the ordinances, prayer, and the spread of the gospel to the ends of the world. [Mark 1:8; Acts 1:8; 2:41-42; 13:1-3]
2) We believe that the local church is an independent and self-governing body responsible only to Christ Who is its Savior and Lord, and that its relationship to other ecclesiastical bodies is one of fellowship only. [Acts 20:17, 28-32; Revelation 2-3]
3) We believe that the ordinances of the church are two:
a) Baptism: it is the immersion of a believer in water as a symbol of his union with the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, and as a public testimony of faith in Christ. [Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:38, 41; Romans 6:4]
b) The Lord’s Supper: it is a symbol of the believer’s communion with the Lord Jesus Christ and a commemoration of His death until He comes.
① We will invite all believers who are living in obedience to the Lord to participate in the Lord’s Supper with us.
② In order to honor properly the Lord’s death, we will always precede the Lord’s Supper with solemn heart-searching and self-judgment. [Matthew 26:26-30; 1Corinthians 11:17-34]
10. Maintaining Purity [Separation]
a. Ecclesiastical
1. We believe that the Bible (for example, in Israel’s history) and church history teach the grave danger of compromise with apostasy. Such compromise results in not only the loss of God’s blessing but the incurring of God’s wrath. [Deuteronomy 28:15-48; 1 Kings 11:1-11; Revelation 2:20-23]
2. We believe that all believers are called unto a life of holiness; therefore, maintaining church purity demands that the church avoid the world’s evil practices, expel and separate from false teachers, and even refuse cooperation with disobedient believers who through indifference or ignorance cooperate with apostates. [James 4:4; 2 John 10-11; Jude 1:3; Romans 16:17; Galatians 1:8-9; 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15]
3. We therefore, humbly but firmly refuse all association with the World Council of Churches, ecumenical evangelism, new evangelicalism, and the charismatic movement.
b. Personal
1. We believe that every believer is commanded to be separate from the world so as to have no fellowship with the evil works or darkness but rather to reprove them. [Ephesians 5:1-17; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18]
2. We believe that all the saved should live in such a manner as not to bring reproach upon our Savior and Lord. We therefore urge every member of Calvary Baptist Church to live as children of light in this dark world and to abstain from “every appearance of evil” in dress, conversation, amusement, business, and habits. [Romans 12:1-2; 1 Thessalonians 5:5, 22; 1 Peter 2:9- 12]
11. Future Events
a. We believe in the personal, bodily, pretributional, premillennial, and imminent return of Christ for His church. [Acts 1:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13- 18; 5:9; 2 Thessalonians 2:7; Revelation 3:10; Matthew 24:42]
b. We believe that at the moment of Christ’s return the dead in Christ shall be raised in glorified bodies, and the living in Christ shall be given glorified bodies without tasting death, and all shall be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. [1 Corinthians 15:42-54; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18]
c. We believe that immediately following the removal of the Church from the earth, the righteous judgment of God shall be poured out upon the unbelieving world. This seven-year period of “tribulation” will be culminated by the revelation of Christ when He will return to earth with the saints to sit upon the throne of David and to establish His millennial kingdom. [Revelation 6-19; Revelation 19:11-20:6]
d. We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, the everlasting blessedness of the saved, and the everlasting, conscious punishment of the lost. [John 5:28-29; Luke 16:19-31; Revelation 20:5-6, 12-15]
